Apple Maps vs. Google Maps: Which One Should You Use?

Updated: Feb 10

Apple Maps and Google Maps are the most popular mapping services available today. Both have their pros and cons, depending on what you need them for. This article compares them to four key aspects: accuracy, design, integration, and 3D data.

Pins on the map

Accuracy: Google Maps is widely regarded as the most accurate mapping service, with reliable data and directions. Apple Maps had a rocky start in 2012, with many errors and missing information. However, Apple has improved its maps significantly since then and now offers accurate location and navigation services.

Design: Apple Maps has a minimalist design that makes it easy to read and understand. It shows only the essential information and avoids cluttering the screen. Google Maps has a more complex design that can be overwhelming at times. It shows more information and options, but also requires more attention and interaction.

Integration: Apple Maps is integrated with Siri, the voice assistant on every iPhone. This means you can ask Siri for directions and have them automatically open in Apple Maps. Google Maps also has voice commands, but they are not as seamless as Siri. You may need to install a separate app or use a different device to access them.

3D data: Apple Maps uses its 3D data more extensively than Google Maps. When you zoom in on a location, you can see more details of buildings and landmarks. Google Maps waits until you zoom in very close before showing this level of detail.

Both Apple Maps and Google Maps also offer transit directions, but their availability and quality vary depending on your location. Generally speaking, Google Maps has more comprehensive transit information than Apple Maps.

So which one should you use? It depends on your preferences and needs. If you value accuracy, functionality, and transit options, Google Maps may be your better choice. Apple Maps may suit you better if you prefer simplicity, integration, and 3D views.

However, there is no need to stick to one service only. You can use both depending on the situation. For example, you can use Apple Maps for driving directions with Siri, but switch to Google Maps for finding nearby businesses or public transportation.

The bottom line is that both Apple Maps and Google Maps are excellent mapping services that can help you get where you want to go. The best way to find out which one works best for you is to try them out yourself.
